CHAMPEX ARTILLERY FORT
The history of Champex!
Built between 1940 and 1943, the artillery fort and its underground fortifications were modernized and adapted to a potential nuclear conflict during the Cold War and were used by the Swiss army until 1998. The Champex-Lac artillery fort is the pivotal point of the fortified system in the Grand-Saint-Bernard region. The fort features over 600 metres of tunnels dug into the mountains. Completely invisible from the outside, it could house 300 men!
You can visit three separate sections:
- The first is dedicated to housing the troops: billeting, kitchen, refectory, sickbay (with operating room), sanitary facilities, power station.
- The second is dedicated to command: fire control station, offices, etc.
- And the third for combat: gun casemates, huge ammunition stores…
THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
A garden located over 1500 metres above sea-level!
The Flore-Alpe Alpine Botanical Garden is an enchanting place located at an altitude of 1,500 metres. With its rock gardens and small bridges overlooking water features, it is a real pleasure to wander around. Visitors can contemplate an unique panorama of Lake Champex and the snow-capped peaks of the Combins. Four thousand species of plants flourish on more than 6,000 m² of land, including local flora, species from neighbouring regions, and species from the mountain ranges of Europe and other continents. Flore-Alpe is one of the richest and most prestigious gardens in the Alps. In 2007, Flore-Alpe was awarded the Schulthess Prize for Swiss Heritage Gardens.
PEDALO & PADDLE
Enjoy the lake and its water activities!
The village of Champex, with its dense forests, traditional wooden chalets and magnificent lake, looks like a little Swiss Canada. You can rent paddle boards and pedals from a small hut on the water’s edge. Enjoy this relaxing place nestled in the heart of the mountains.
CABLE CAR WITH PANORAMIC VIEW
A breathtaking panorama!
From the restaurant terrace to the top of the cable car, enjoy a stunning panoramic view of Grand-Combin, Vélan and Lac Léman! There are a number of hiking options, from the ascent to the Cabane d’Orny and Cabane du Trient to the descent to Champex via the magnificent Val d’Arpette.
ZIP LINE
Get some height!
The panorama from the top of the La Breya chairlift in Champex-Lac worth the detour itself but to add a little fun to your day, you can also enjoy the 2 long zip lines, 540 and 520 metres long, which will give you a different view of the Combins massif at 4,314 metres, all the way to Lake Geneva! You will hike though the “Creux de la Breya” combe before walking for 10 minutes to return to the starting point of second zip-line.
BIKING
Bike around the lake!
You can rent a bike and ride around the lake. One route leaves from Champex and follows the lake, where you can admire the Grand-Combin. There’s an exceptional view of the lake and the village, and you will pass by the Breya cable car to discover the resort’s two other villages, Champex-d’en-Haut and Champex-d’en-Bas. The tracks through the forest are a pleasant way to discover the flora and fauna of this village.
SWIMMING POOL IN CHAMPEX
A heated outdoor pool!
Champex-Lac’s open-air swimming pool is heated to 27°. Next to the pool, you will find a refreshment bar with snacks, a badminton, tennis and beach volleyball court, a ping-pong table, a petanque piste and a slackline on the water. For those wishing to learn how to swim or perfect their technique, swimming lessons are organized for all.
It’s the outdoor spaces and especially the desire to share them that led us to create the agency in 2019.
